Jaffna is situated in the Northern Province and serves as it’s capital city. Jaffna has a long history as to being one of the most contested cities in the island since the days of the Portuguese occupation to the more recent civil war.
Visiting Jaffna is like being transported to another era. Most of the prominent buildings existing were made or reconstructed during the Dutch and British eras giving the city quite a unique look somewhat similar the southern coastal town of Galle. The Dutch fort in the Jaffna city is quite a marvellous structure that definitely warrants a visit. Another structure that is very notable is the Jaffna library. In addition to having been one of the best stocked in the island, it is also an architectural genius to look at.
Jaffna is situated on a peninsula on the northern corner of the island. This means you are never too far from the beach. The beaches here are some of the best in the island mainly due to the fact that most still retain their beauty without being spoiled by too many people. A few must visit places in Jaffna include:
- Casuarina Beach
- Santhakulam Beach
- Thondaimannar Beach
- Dutch Forts
- Tidal Well
- Keerimalai Wells
- Chundikulam Sanctuary
- Many notable Hindu Temples
